Dr. Pitoňák works at National Institute of Mental Health (NUDZ) located in Klecany and focuses on interdisciplinary and socially-relevant research of sexualities in contexts of social psychology, adictology and comprehensive framing of HIV/AIDS epidemiology. Dr. Pitoňák is also a member of Inter-ministerial coordination working group of the National HIV/AIDS program in the Czech Republic.  As part of his agenda, Dr. Pitoňák works on development of LGBTQ psychology and specifically researches effects of stigma and stress on (mental) health of sexual minorities.

As alumnus of human geography, Dr. Pitoňák also works externally in connection with Charles University and partakes at the development of geographies of sexualities in Czechia, supervises students’ theses and occasionally teaches courses with focus on sexualities within topical framing.

Dr. Pitoňák holds degrees in Biology and Geography (2008), Teaching of Biology and Geography (2011), passed Rigorosum examination (RNDr.) in the field of Social geography and Regional development, and in 2015 defended his PhD dissertation entitled “Queer geographies of sexualities: sociocultural organization of sexualities in space and (de)construction of heteronormativity” in the field of Social geography and Regional development.

During the course of his studies, Dr. Pitoňák was awarded with the Prof. PhDr. Václav Příhoda Award for the best graduates of pedagogical studies at Charles University in Prague. In addition, he studied human geography at the Stockholm University in Sweden (2010), spent a short internship at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, US (2014), and worked during the spring term at The University of Sheffield as a visiting researcher (2014).
